We Tested Ballekes, The New HotSpot For Meatballs in Saint-Gilles

You said Meatballs? We tried out Ballekes, the new balsy place in Saint-Gilles.

If you are looking for a typical Belgian place to eat, Ballekes is the place to go to! This restaurant just opened over a week ago in Saint Gilles, and as you may guess by the name, serves delicious Belgian meatballs.

At the head of this oh so Belgian cuisine are Florence and Thibault, two meatball lovers who are real meatball experts. The recipes they use have been passed down to them by their grandma’s and their goal is to perpetuate the tradition with local ingredients.

We had the pleasure to test their menu and it was exquisite. We got to choose what kind of meat we wanted (pork/beef, chicken or veggie) and then added our favorite sauce ? Brusseleir, Rabbit, Marol, Trappist, Schroumpf or Kriek to the meatballs. Of course, we took fries as a side dish and dipped them is some yummy homemade mayonnaise.

It all comes served on a wooden board with each meatball in an individual cast iron pan. As for the finishing touch, everything from the table to the glasses is marked with a Ballekes stamp.

Speaking of decoration, you immediately feel that someone put their heart into it. Florence imagined it all, from the wooden benches, to the giant LED illuminated letters and even the Manneken-Pis inspired wallpaper. Light comes pouring into the restaurant through two big windows and the black and golden scheme gives a posh finishing touch to the place.

We will definitely come back to eat their delicious Ballekes again and have a taste of their other sauces.

Ballekes hiiiiiiiiiiiiii !!!

Vendredi soir, nous avons testé Ballekes et je dois vous prévenir que cet article ne sera peut-être pas le plus objectif de la semaine !! D’abord parce que je suis une fan incontestée et incontestable de boulettes (on dit « meatball » quand on est cool) et c’est le produit que Ballekes a choisi de mettre en avant !! Je pourrais manger des boulettes midi et soir (pour le matin, non merci, quand même) ! Donc premier hiiiiiiiiiiiii d’hystérie en débarquant au resto vendredi. Second hiiiiiiiiiiiii, je passe la soirée avec deux amies chères qui ont le don d’enjoliver les soirées !! Bref, tous les ingrédients étaient au top pour que cette dégustation soit une réussite. Et ce qui devait arriver arriva : on a a-do-ré Ballekes !! Tout : la déco, la nourriture et le concept, tout je vous dis !!

Bon, allez, malgré mon enthousiasme d’exaltée de la boulette, je vais essayer de vous faire une description un peu plus détaillée que « hiiiiiii » et même d’être un chouia critique. Ballekes est donc dans cette veine de resto centré autour d’un produit (ici, les boulettes, vous avez compris) et qui se trouve à la frontière entre le resto et le fast-food. Servi au comptoir donc et réception du repas sur un petit plateau (beaucoup plus chic que ceux du MacDo). Niveau repas, vous choisissez votre boulette (veggie, poulet ou porc/bœuf), votre sauce (tomate, lapin, kriek/cerise, trappiste/chicon,champignon crème) et votre accompagnement (genre des frites). Nous avons opté pour la formule menu qui propose de prendre deux boulettes, deux sauces et un accompagnement pour 13,50 euros. J’ai choisi une boulette poulet avec la sauce champignon crème (une tuerie intersidérale), une boulette porc/bœuf avec la sauce lapin (délicieuse) et des frites. Les frites sont correctes mais assez quelconques par contre réussite complète au niveau des boulettes et des sauces : pas grasses et pleines de goût. La présentation est sympa dans des petits caquelons et les portions sont très généreuses, j’aurais pu me contenter d’une seule boulette. Le soir où nous sommes allées, il y avait deux desserts : mousse au chocolat ou banofee (hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii). Chouette choix de boissons notamment de bières spéciales.

Le service est encore un peu balbutiant mais quoi de plus normal après deux jours d’ouverture. La déco est canon, tout à fait mon style et Ballekes se trouve à St Gilles, chaussée de Charleroi à la place de feu le Sisisi… Possible également de prendre à emporter…

Allez, à votre tour d’aller y faire hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. N’hésitez pas à y emmener vos minus, cet endroit a un haut potentiel minus friendly !!

The Belgians among you have grown to these round bites and maybe cherish grandma’s recipe as their heirloom. But Belgian or not, everybody enjoys a nice plate of meatballs! At BALLEKES, Florence and Thibault honour their grannies’ recipes and offer a variety of meatballs with other Belgian specialties like Fries, Beer and Chocolate. They use local ingredients when possible and work with local beer brewers such as Brussels Beer Project. So whether you’re feeling nostalgic of your childhood’s favorite dish or want to offer a real Belgian experience to a visiting friend, Ballekes is a great place to be. Basically, you follow these steps:

  1. Choose your ball type: veggie, chicken or beef&pork
  2. Choose your style: sauce in the pan, baguette or salad
  3. Pick your sides & extras: fries, sauces, croquettes…

I have tried the 3 ball-varieties and have to say they’re all good. Juicy and tasty. The sauces are super nice too. Decadent and delicate at the same time. I particularly like the Brusseleir (tomato sauce) because it’s a classic and theirs is simple and perfect. I also have a soft spot for the trappist (trappist beer and chicons). And the fries… the fries are just the way I like them. Thick, crisp outside and soft inside. And if I can give you one last tip: try the truffle mayo (and be addicted forever).

To sum it up: at Ballekes, you get good and honest food for a reasonable price. Plus it’s a super cool Belgo-Belgian concept in a beautiful and bright space. So what are you waiting for? Come join the meatball revolution!
